Word to Peter Frampton

Stephen Colbert Christmas CardI hereby declare that the Stephen Colbert vs. The Decemberists Shred Off is the best thing to happen to humanity. Ever. And possibly the best thing to happen to Christmas. You don’t believe me? See for yourself. I mean, if Henry Kissinger thought it was important, then you should probably think it’s important.

I thought this post was probably better than no post at all. I’m at home now and don’t have a desk to put my computer on which ultimately deters me from using it. My apologies. I’m going out of town tomorrow, so I hope you all have a lovely Christmas.

Word to Matt Wertz

Matt Wertz 2I bought myself an early Christmas gift. But don’t worry, I haven’t stopped being cheap. I only spent $3. I bought myself Matt Wertz’s EP Today and Tomorrow from his online store.

I am usually pretty opposed to buying things from an artist’s online store because it can get quite expensive, but this time I made an exception, mostly due to Matt’s Advent Calendar, which I think is a fantastic idea. I suspect it was Matt’s idea himself, since he seems to be pretty into Christmas, which is also a big plus in my book. He recorded “O Holy Night” last year and “What Child is This?” this year (both available on iTunes), which I will probably buy later.

I took advantage of the advent calendar offerings of free shipping on all internet orders (December 5th) and the sale on the EP (December 6th). This is actually quite remarkable because it takes a lot to get me to buy a CD, even an EP. I actually didn’t know that much about Matt before this week, other than the fact that his music BFF is Dave Barnes and they both live in Nashville. So they obviously have good taste in cities.

Yeah, I’ll admit that I’ve developed a little music crush on Matt Wertz. This is possibly a direct result of him covering “The King of Wishful Thinking” at almost every concert, which is possibly one of my favorite songs from the 80′s ever. And also his Self-Appointed Celebrity Playlists on iTunes are quite awesome. A lot of the songs he included on those are real huzzah! songs for me: Thicke’s “Lazy Bones”, Steve Winwood’s “Back in the High Life”, Phil Collins “Easy Lover”, and Bryan Adams’ “Can’t Stop This Thing We Started.”

So it’s safe to say I’m pretty excited to get this in the mail.

Word to the Transfer

I have recently developed a new hobby, which is a direct result of excess (albeit, paid) time browsing the internet. I called it “picking out colleges to pretend to transfer to.”

I have developed a pretty extensive “wishlist” of sorts of what colleges I would fake transfer to. Some are a little absurd. For example, I have desperately wanted to transfer to UNC – Chapel Hill ever since I first visited my friend Arden (who goes there) over a year ago. The ridiculous campus is what ultimately seduced me and I soon developed an intense case of college envy. The problem? There is literally no major they offer that would be remotely suitable to my career goals. Also, the massive student loan I would need to attend would suffocate my little Jewish heart.

There are, however, many other schools where the only real issue of attending is money or location. Some of my favorite schools to pretend to transfer to are:

  1. Kendall College
Downtown Chicago, hell-o! Plus I could make Rachel room with me, and wouldn’t that be fun?
  2. Johnson & Wales University
I actually applied here and received a respectable amount of scholarship money, but was leaning away from culinary arts at the time. And $20,000/year seems a bit outlandish to spend on a hospitality degree.
  3. Cornell School of Hotel Administration
Same justification as JWU– too much money for hospitality. I’d be willing to take out loans for that much if I was going to become a doctor or a lawyer, maybe. However, Cornell would probably be where I would go to graduate school if I ever decide I want to go. It only takes ONE YEAR. That I can live with.
  4. University of Memphis
I’m actually a little angry that I didn’t know about this until last week. Why didn’t my guidance counselor tell me anything about UMemphis? Their hotel management program has an on-site Holiday Inn! (Holiday Inn was actually started by a guy from Memphis). And an added bonus– I could have used my lotterly scholarship here. Yeah, I’m a little bitter this was kept a secret. I’m going to file this under “you win some you lose some.”
  5. Oh gosh, anywhere in Pennsylvania
Pennsylvania is the new uh, let’s go with Massachusetts. You heard it here first, and quite possibly last. I’m hoping to do either one of my internships in Philadelpha freedom.
  6. University of British Columbia, Vancouver
I’m determined to live in Canada, if only for a short period of time.
  7. Nashville State Community College
I miss you, Mom!… and in the interest of making this a complete list of 10:
  8. Harvard
  9. Princeton
  10. Yale

So it’s really great fake transferring and all, but if I stay put and do one session of summer school, I can be done taking classes in May 2008 and move where I damn please (or whoever hires me for their management trainee program). Say it with me– The Marriott in Stamford, Connecticut. I really want to meet Will Shortz one day!

Word to Other Blogs

As some of you may or may not know, I do keep a LiveJournal. The convenience of having all your friends’ posts on one page all together is great. But now that I have finally gotten myself into the world of RSS, I find myself rarely visiting LiveJournal or posting there except in times of extreme fangirlyness. To be honest, I miss the blogging arena.

But now that I have finally redesigned this site to my liking, I find myself out of touch with blogging. Not the actual act of posting, but with other blogs. My links list down there to the right is minimal. Most of the time I just go to Maura’s site and visit her links (hey, what are sisters for?), but even that isn’t getting it done for me.

So if you have a blog that’s good and not neon yellow colored, please comment and let me know where it is. I love reading about cooking, Stephen Colbert, politics (with a sense of humor), your weekly bowling league, music (not emo), and movies. If you talk about any of these things on your blog, please comment.

Word to My Job

Things that are completely awesome about my sweet little on-campus job:

  1. It’s on campus.
  2. It’s sweet.
  3. And I redesigned this site on the clock.

Also, I like getting paid. It’s paychecks from this lovely just-show-up-and-browse-the-internet-job that made it possible for me to purchase a new digital camera on Black Friday. Hopefully I’ll stop being lazy and post some pictures that I’ve taken with the new camera.

Both my parents seemed a bit surprised that I purchased a digital camera for myself without first asking for it for Christmas, as I am now known for avoiding the expenditure of my personal funds at pretty much all costs (ha- how oxymoronic!). Don’t worry Santa, there’s still plenty of gifts out there for you to purchase for me, or have your elfs make in the workshop. They should start whittling out a 24 Day 5 DVD box set while I’m on the subject. I also have my heart set on a Nike Sport Kit and possibly some better running shoes to go with it, but you’ll be hearing from me.
