Things I Want

P1010653

I said at the beginning of the year that I was going to take more pictures.  One of my reasons for doing this was that I really, really, REALLY want a digital SLR.  But if I am completely honest with myself, I don’t need one at all.  I’m not going to become a photographer, and the point-and-shoot I have currently takes some pretty decent photos for a point-and-shoot.  And I don’t even take pictures all that often, which is why I want to take more– to justify getting a digital SLR.

If I’ve even more honest with myself, I can’t really afford one.  So instead of splurging, I’ve set up a savings account just for a camera, with an automatic bi-weekly transfer of money from my checking.  I’ve just started it, and I’m on track to have saved up enough for a camera in… one year.  Maybe by then I will have entirely convinced myself that I don’t need one and use the money on something more practical.

Alright, I have to go drop $250 now to register for the GMAT.  *cries*

Cutting Back

Things I need that require an outlay of money, and therefore I don’t need them:

  • haircut – last one was in May
  • oil change – last one was in May yikes!
  • gym membership
  • stretchy pants to lounge in
  • turtlenecks for winter

What I'm Reading

I haven’t been reading any of your lovely personal blogs lately.  To be honest, if you aren’t writing something about personal finance you will have a hard time catching my attention.

Why?  I don’t know myself.  It’s not like I have any debt to consolidate, or credit card balances to snowball a la Dave Ramsey.  Nor do I have money to invest–although, I did recently open a savings account for the first time since high school.  And yes, I did it because I have been consuming personal finance blogs like crack.  CRACK!  (Say crack again.  CRACK!)

I get excited to bring dinner leftovers to work for lunch and think about how much money I am saving.  Am I crazy?  Yes, possibly.  All I know is this is a lot healthier than that period of time where I was obsessed with celebrity gossip blogs.

Here are my favorites:

Unprepared

Just this morning I was walking back from my coffee shop of choice in Edgartown– Espresso Love. I was wearing a white t-shirt, so of course I spilled coffee all over myself. And that got me to thinking about all the things I never learned to do, like how to not spill coffee on myself when I’m wearing white t-shirts. In reality, there are so many things I haven’t learned to do that make me feel unprepared for the world.

I have never learned to open a can with a can opener. For this one I blame my parents for having an electric one in the kitchen for so long. At the grocery store I always try to buy cans that have the pull-tab, because I know that I’m just asking for trouble trying to use a can opener. Could someone be so kind as to show me how?

I have never learned to not tip like a rockstar. Could someone remind me that I’m in college and am not made of money? See exhibits A and B.

tip2 tip1

I have never learned to walk in heels.  I think I may have touched on this in a past post, along the lines of I’ll never really feel like a woman until I can feel confident wearing heels.  But really, life is to short to cause your feet so much pain.  And there are so many no-heel alternatives out there.  Plus, I am too tall for heels!  I might consider trying to train myself in this arena if I were headed for a career sitting at a desk, but I fear I will be standing up for most of my working life, so heels be darned.

I have never learned to accept my hair the way it is. I’m on my third hair straightener now and have more hair products than you can shake a stick at, which is proof that I am willing to spend any amount of money to not have my hair look the way it was intended. There was one morning, about a year and a half ago, where I woke up and was like “YES!” hair2about my real hair. And I have never been able to get my hair to look like that on it’s own again. Here’s a picture from that morning:

I have never learned to not take jokes too far.  I think it’s the part of me that always wanted to be a stand-up comedienne.  I’ll figure this one out eventually.

I have never learned how to act at concerts.  Maybe this is because I am incredibly white, but like… what do you do at concerts?  I just feel so awkward that standing still seems to be the best strategy.  Someone please tell me this will change now that I’m 21 and can drink at concerts?

The state of my finances

Reasons I may be managing my money quite well:

  • I use men’s shaving cream. 92 cents! You can’t be that.
  • I pack my own lunch from home.  Turkey sandwich + carrots = golden!
  • I use a water bottle that I refill multiple times a day.
  • I rarely drive my car.

Reasons I may be managing my money quite poorly:

  • On Tuesdays I always pick up this 90 minute shift. I make $6/hour, so that means $9 before taxes. Before this shift I always feel the need to stop by Starbucks on the way for a latte for which I pay $4.50. This is probably counterproductive.
  • I forgot to submit my time sheets for the current pay period.  This means two more weeks without money.  My “Advanced Lodging” professor, who is in actuality an economist, suggested on Monday that I go ahead and spend the 2008 tax rebate before I get it.  This is not looking like such a terrible idea anymore.
  • Sometimes I buy pens like they’re crack.  I mean really, who needs more than one functional pen?  But I can’t help myself.  Pens are so seductive!
  • I go out to eat more than necessary.  But really, who doesn’t?

Giddy

I bought this in brass/khaki/white on Saturday.

OMG I feel like a new person. I have yet to experience buyer’s remorse.

What should I give up for Lent? Candy? Baked goods? Soda? Expensive handbags?

High finance

This evening was supposed to be dedicated to cramming for my Finance 301 exam. But I think I already know enough about finance. See Exhibit A.

Ballin'

I mean, if I can afford to be throwing $100 bills around in my backyard, don’t you think I’m doing pretty good in the finance department? I think so.
